The driving style does effect you mpg quite a lot. Forester i Premium, 6 speed manual, about 55k miles on it now. One of the many MFD screens shows mpg overall vs. odometer and I am at mpg overall. Generally goes down in the summer when I have the array of racks on the roof and up in the winter. Ive driven an auto XT and a manual WRX. Never driven a manual XT OB. The turbo in the WRX is a much better setup than the old for driveability. More torque makes the shifting smoother and the ride better for passengers. The auto XT will be a more pleasant drive for the passengers but the manual will be more fun. I would make sure to drive two XT's if you can and an auto to compare.
